Embrace™ Clinical Checklist
During the Fitting:
- Position the child in an optimal seated posture and keep the child’s buttocks as far back as possible in the seat before adjusting the location of the Embrace pads.
- Make sure that the broad surface of each Embrace pad is parallel to the child’s thigh. Adjust the child’s clothing so there are no wrinkles or folds that will hurt the child.
- The padded perimeter of the pad should locate below the child’s ASIS.
- Be sure that the Embrace™ pads can open fully. They should not obstruct transfers of the child into and out of the wheelchair.
- Ask the RTS or vendor to install a simple two-point lap belt that the child can use during travel on a motor vehicle and other times when Embrace is not used.
- Be sure that both Embrace™ pads are latched securely and cannot lift away without pressing the release button. Even though it may feel like you are pressing hard against the child’s thigh, this firm support will help the child sit better and more securely.
- Once the installation is complete, have the child use Embrace for 20-30 minutes. Readjust the pads, if necessary.
- Be sure that both parent and child understand how Embrace works. Review its operation and give them the Embrace Tip Sheet after the fitting is done. Ask the parent to keep the Tip Sheet with the child so others learn how to use it.
- It may take time for the child to feel comfortable using Embrace. Recommended that parent follow this schedule when the child is first using Embrace:
Day Maximum Time To Be Used First 2 hours Second 3 hours Third 5 Hours More As long as is comfortable
- Ask the parent to check for redness and pressure marks and contact you if Embrace is causing any significant physical discomfort or lasting redness.
- No safety regulations exist for traveling in motor vehicles while wearing Embrace or other types of postural control devices.
- While traveling in a motor vehicle, it is strongly recommended that the child use:
- A lap belt; NOT Embrace;
- A wheeled mobility base with a transit option that meets the requirements of relevant RESNA/ANSI standards, and
- A wheelchair tiedown and occupant restraint system provided in the motor vehicle that meets requirements of relevant RESNA/ANSI standards.
